SSI allows up to eight students per instructor in an Open Water course. Most schools on Bonaire run six. We run four. Sometimes two. Often one.
This is not a marketing decision. It is a teaching decision that happens to be expensive.
What changes with four students
With eight students, you manage the group. You run the skill, watch for the hand signal, move on. The students who got it move forward. The students who did not get it move forward too, because you cannot stop the group for one person.
With four, you teach individuals. You see the student who clears her mask too fast and swallows water. You see the one who kicks with his knees instead of his hips. You see the one whose buoyancy is off because she is holding her breath without realizing it. You fix these things in the water, on that dive, in that moment. Not in a debrief on the surface where they have already forgotten what happened.
I have taught over 700 students. The ones who leave here as genuinely confident divers are the ones where I had time to watch and correct. Every time.
The cost of small groups
Four students means less revenue per session. A six-person Open Water class generates 50% more income than a four-person class with the same instructor time. I know the math.
But a four-person class generates referrals. Those students tell their friends that they got personal coaching, not a conveyor belt. They come back for specialties. Some of them come back for Divemaster. The lifetime value of a student who trusts us is higher than the daily rate of two extra students.
The difference shows up in the reviews. A large-group review says "great experience." A small-group review says "Stephan noticed I was struggling with equalization and spent ten extra minutes with me at 3 meters." The difference between good and exceptional is in the details that only show up when you have time.
What this means for you
If you book a course with us, you will not share your instructor with seven strangers. You will share with three at most. Your instructor is Stephan or Linda. Not a rotating staff member you meet that morning.
Your pace is your pace. If you need a third try on mask clearing, you get a third try. Nobody is waiting.
That is the product. Not the reef, not the island, not the water temperature. The product is attention.
