It is hard to find a better place to learn to dive. The water is warm year-round, visibility is regularly 20 to 30 metres, and there is almost no current on the leeward coast. We start beginners at Bachelor's Beach: you walk in from the sand in waist-deep water. No boats, no seasickness, no backflips off a zodiac on day one.

Three to four days for SSI Open Water. You do the theory on the app before you fly in, so you hit the water on arrival. Most people do mornings and still have afternoons free. Just want to try? A Try Scuba takes one session.

Not well. SSI asks for a 200-metre swim at any pace and 10 minutes of floating. No stopwatch, no style points. If you are comfortable in the water, you will be fine.

Ten for Open Water. Kids usually pick it up faster than adults because they don't overthink the breathing part. Under ten: SSI Explorers in very shallow water.

Yes, and we do this a lot. Bring your referral form or logbook. SSI, PADI, or another agency — the skills transfer. One to two days with us on the reef. Warm water and good visibility fix what cold pools break.

Everything from first breath to instructor. Try Scuba, Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, twelve specialties (Nitrox, Deep, Night, Mares Horizon SCR, and more), Divemaster, and Instructor Training. We are the only SSI Instructor Training Center on Bonaire. You could walk in as a non-diver and leave as a certified instructor.

For you: nothing that matters. Both are internationally recognized. Your SSI card works at every dive center in the world. We chose SSI for their digital platform and the scheduling flexibility it gives us. If you hold a PADI cert, that works fine too.

We recommend one if it has been more than twelve months. Half a day, no exam, no stress. You run through essential skills in shallow water until it feels natural again.

Yes. We are the only place on the island for the full path. Divemaster takes four to six weeks. Instructor Training runs in small cohorts of max four, two to three times a year. Stephan teaches every session.

You drive to a site, park next to a painted yellow stone marker, gear up at the truck, and walk in. No boat, no schedule, no group to wait for. Bonaire has 86 marked dive sites, 54 accessible from shore on the leeward coast. You decide when, how long, which site. Most divers do two to four dives a day this way. It is the reason people come back.

Turtles on most dives. Eagle rays, octopus, frogfish, seahorses, tarpon, and moray eels are regulars. Nurse sharks show up now and then. Dolphins and whale sharks are rare but they happen. The reef has been protected since 1979, so the coral is healthy and the fish are not shy. Bonaire's macro life is exceptional once you know where to look.

Any time. Bonaire sits below the hurricane belt at 12°N latitude. Water stays 27 to 29°C (80-84°F) year-round. Visibility is 20 to 30 metres on a normal day. If you want quieter sites and fewer people, May and June are the sweet spot. High season runs December through April.

$40 USD per calendar year. Covers all diving and snorkeling in Bonaire National Marine Park, plus Washington Slagbaai National Park. Children under 12 are free. You pay once at bonairenaturefee.org or on arrival, not per dive. The fee goes directly to STINAPA for reef conservation.

Yes. Complete sets or individual items: BCD, regulator, wetsuit, computer, mask, fins, lights. Serviced regularly. Pick up and drop off at Kaya Perenales 3, Kralendijk.

Pick up full tanks, dive, bring back the empties. We fill to 200 bar, air or Nitrox at the same rate. Walk-ins from 8am. Single tanks, multi-day packs, and weekly unlimited available. The unlimited pack usually pays for itself by day three.

You don't need it. You'll want it. Three or four dives a day, Nitrox gives you longer bottom times and less fatigue. Certification takes half a day.

For shore diving, yes. You need a pickup truck to carry tanks. Budget $60 to $100 per day. Book before you fly in, especially in high season. They run out.

Cert card (digital is fine), reef-safe sunscreen, and whatever personal gear you like diving with. Many divers bring their own mask and computer. Everything else you can rent from us. The water is 27 to 29 degrees — a 3mm shorty is more than enough.

Stephan is the only SSI Instructor Trainer on Bonaire. The highest certification SSI issues. The person teaching your beginner course is the same person who trains instructors.

We keep groups to four max, often one-on-one. And we live here. This is not seasonal work. When you come back next year, we will be at the same shop.
