Every dive site list for Bonaire starts the same way. 1000 Steps. Salt Pier. Hilma Hooker. They deserve the reputation. But Bonaire has around 90 shore-accessible sites, and most visitors stick to the same twelve.
Here are five that we go back to when it is just us.
1. Karpata
A steep wall where you feel like a diver in space. You drop off the edge and there is nothing but blue below you and coral beside you. The wall alternates between coral-covered sections and sand channels, and the variety keeps every depth interesting. Turtles are regulars here. The hard coral is some of the healthiest on the island.
Karpata is on most people's lists, but many only do it once and move on. We keep going back.
2. Tolo
Just north of 1000 Steps. Most visitors head straight to 1000 Steps because it is famous. We skip it and drive a few minutes further to Tolo. The shallow section is much prettier, with better coral coverage and fewer divers. The entry is easier than 1000 Steps too.
If someone asks us where to go in the north, Tolo is what we say.
3. The Lake
Right next to Hilma Hooker. The Lake on its own is a solid dive, but what makes it special is the route: you start at The Lake, swim south along the reef to Hilma Hooker, spend time on the wreck, and swim back. It is one of the best point-to-point dives you can do from shore on Bonaire. Two sites in one dive, no boat needed.
4. Playa Frans
Far north. The road from Rincon is unpaved for the last stretch. You need a truck or a sturdy rental. The shore entry is a rocky scramble.
What you get: a wall that starts at 6 meters, covered in sea fans and tube sponges, with almost zero other divers. The visibility here is consistently better than the central sites because there is less runoff. On a good day, 35 meters.
Not a beginner dive. The entry alone requires confidence. But for experienced divers who want a site that feels undiscovered, this is it.
5. Vista Blue
Past Atlantis, near the kite area. Vista Blue is loaded with soft coral. The reef is colourful in a way that the more popular central sites are not, because soft coral thrives here and sees almost no diver traffic.
It is not a site you will find on most recommendation lists. That is the point.
