I get asked about gear more than anything else. What BCD, what computer, what wetsuit. My answer is usually the same: rent it until you know what you want. There is one exception.
Buy your own mask.
Not because rental masks are bad. Ours are clean, they fit most faces, and they work. But a mask that fits your face is a different experience from a mask that fits most faces. The seal is better. You stop adjusting. You stop thinking about it. That is the point.
The one we recommend
The XDeep Radical. Frameless, single lens, low volume. It costs around $110. It is not the cheapest mask on the market, but it is the one we trust. It fits a wide range of faces, fogs the least after a proper prep, and survives getting thrown in a dive bag for years.
I teach with the Radical. Linda uses one. Most of our Divemasters end up buying one after trying three others first.
Why low volume matters
A low-volume mask sits closer to your face. Less air inside means easier equalization and a wider field of view. For beginners, easier equalization means less ear trouble on descent. For photographers, wider field of view means fewer missed shots.
The Radical is not the only low-volume mask worth buying. Mares makes several solid options in the same category, and there are cheaper frameless masks that work fine for occasional divers. But for the fit range and the durability, the Radical is what we keep coming back to.
How to check the fit
Put the mask against your face without the strap. Look up. Inhale gently through your nose. If the mask stays on your face without you holding it, the seal works. If it falls, try a different mask. No mask fits everyone.
Do this in a shop, not online. If you are on Bonaire, come by the shop. We have a few models to try on. No pressure.
The gear trap
New divers get pulled into gear decisions too early. They read forums, watch reviews, build wish lists. A $2,000 setup does not make you a better diver. A hundred dives does.
Start with a mask that fits. Rent the rest. After 30 or 40 dives, you will know what you actually want because you will have tried enough rental gear to form an opinion. Not a forum opinion. Yours.
